This webinar will focus on the nature of bilingualism and current evidence on bilingualism and biliteracy in children with Developmental Language Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or Down syndrome. Case studies will be used to discuss various aspects of development (e.g., exposure, the silent period, code switching), assessment (e.g., difference vs disorder), and intervention (e.g., one language or two) within a Hong Kong context.

About the Speaker

Elizabeth Kay-Raining Bird is a professor in the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Dalhousie University and a certified speech-language pathologist. Her research has focused on various aspects of cultural and linguistic diversity including bilingualism in children and youth with language disorders and typical development. She has been an active member in her national Canadian association for speech-language pathologists and audiologists. She is a long-time proponent of basic income as a poverty elimination strategy, advocating through her roles as chair of Basic Income Nova Scotia and member of Coalition Canada Basic Income-Revenu de Base.
