SUMMARY:Functions of the Mouth and Its Role in Development
DESCRIPTION:The mouth plays a central role in multiple aspects of human development; even after childhood we as adults unconsciously use our mouth to focus\, self-regulate or even guide our finely tuned motor actions. \nDuring this 2-day course we will focus on the mouth’s many functions to understand the oral behaviour we see in many of the children we work with. \nThis course is designed for speech and language therapists. No previous knowledge or training is required. \n\n\n\nDates:\n25 and 26 Mar 2022 (Fri and Sat)\n\n\nTime:\n9.00am – 4.00pm\n\n\nVenue:\nHoliday Inn Singapore Atrium.\n317 Outram Road\nSingapore 169075\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Karin Brinkmann\,\nAfter having worked in her private practice since the late 90s for 25 years\, Karin Brinkmann has since focused on mentoring SLP’s\, OT’s and PT’s\, teachers and (professional) caregivers in 2016. Her main specialty is children with speech (motor) and language disorders\, sensory processing disorders\, and/or neurological disorders. \nKarin: “I want (speech therapists) to be able to understand what the role of Sensory Processing is in developing speech\, language\, and feeding skills…it can make treatment easier and more effective as I stress the importance of working in a functional way. By recognising the children’s (unique) way of processing information\, it is possible to see it as a strength and not as a problem.” \nKarin has also been a PROMPT instructor since 2008\, and travels the world to teach both PROMPT and Sensory Processing in English\, Dutch and German. \nCourse Outline\nDay 1: \n\n\n\n09:00 – 10:45\nWelcome and introduction\, workshop objectives;\nIntroduction to the mouth and its general role in development\n\n\n10:45 – 11:00\nShort break\n\n\n11:00 – 12:00\nThe mouth’s role in relation to feeding\n\n\n12:00 – 13:00\nLunch break\n\n\n13:00 – 14:30\nThe mouth’s role in relation to regulation and attention\n\n\n14:30 – 14:45\nShort break\n\n\n14:45 – 16:00\nThe mouth’s role in relation to discovering the world\, building concepts and communication\n\n\n\nDay 2: \n\n\n\n09:00 – 10:45\nConstraints: individual\, task and environment\n\n\n10:45 – 11:00\nShort break\n\n\n11:00 – 12:00\nTreatment principles for the mouth\n\n\n12:00 – 13:00\nLunchbreak\n\n\n13:00 – 14:30\nAnalysing tools and materials for their use in treatment of oral functions\n\n\n14:30 – 14:45\nShort break\n\n\n14:45 – 16:00\nCase study\nDiscussion and evaluation;\nCertificates\n\n\n\nPlease note: this schedule might be slightly changed at the discretion of the presenter (KB Interactief) \nCourse Objectives\nAfter the course\, the participant should be able to: \n\nDescribe the relationship between sensory systems and motor in regard to oral functioning for speech\, feeding\, regulation\, attention\, posture and general motor development.\nDescribe the development of mouthing and its role in the development of feeding\, speech and language.\nRecognise sensory processing disorders as a possible component in children with oral deficits and/or oral habits.\nDescribe compensation and adaptation techniques for or through oral functions.\nMake critical decisions regarding the choice for tools in the treatment of oral functions.\n\nWho Can Benefit?\nSpeech Language Therapists \nCourse Fees & Closing Dates\n\n\n\nRegistration Type\nClosing Date\nFees (S$)/pax\n\n\n\n30 Sep 2021\n800\n\n\nNormal\nTill Full\n850
