BECOMING A SPEECH THERAPIST

Entering the field requires possession of a bachelor’s degree or above in speech therapy in a recognized tertiary institution or equivalent, and should demonstrate competency as specified in Competency Based Occupational Standards (CBOS) 2011 with reference to the supplementary document by Hong Kong Institute of Speech Therapists (link)

Bachelor’s degree:

  • Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language Pathology, The University of Hong Kong (link)
  • (New) Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Speech Therapy, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (link)

Master’s degree:

  • Master of Speech Therapy, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (link)
  • Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (link)
  • Master of Science in Educational Speech-Language Pathology and Learning Disabilities, The Education University of Hong Kong (link)

Overseas Programmes

Apart from local programmes, there are overseas courses ranging from 4-year undergraduate degrees to 2-year master’s degrees. Clinicians having certification in at least one of the following associations are qualified to be our full members.

  • Speech Pathology Australia (SPA)
  • The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
  • The Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice (ASLTIP)
  • The Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists United Kingdom (RCSLT)
