Very young children in kindergarten and in primary school may experience problems in learning mathematics. Some of these problems can be predictors for dyscalculia manifesting later in the development. Early detection of these signals is important but dyscalculia is not only a question of math problems. Within the diagnostic framework, in addition to the math skills, other aspects will also be examined such as memory, language, motivation and problem-solving skills. Children with dyscalculia or minor mathematical difficulties require specialised support. Within the therapy we jump back to previous phases in the normal math development and appeal to earlier learning strategies. As a speech therapist we will suggest, based on the diagnostic information, supporting aspects at school: stimulation, differentiation, dispensation or compensation.
