A research is on the identification and treatment of stuttering among school-age Cantonese-English bilingual children
|
The first project, titled “Identification of Stuttering in School-age Bilingual Cantonese-English Speaking Children”, focuses on Cantonese-English bilingual children who do not stutter, between the ages of 6 and 12. Speech and language assessments will be conducted to enhance our understanding of stuttering features in bilingual children, thereby contributing to more effective diagnostic criteria for this population.

The second project, titled “Identification and Treatment of Stuttering in School-age Bilingual Cantonese-English Speaking Children”, targets Cantonese-English bilingual children who stutter, also between the ages of 6 and 12. Participants will attend five consecutive treatment sessions based on the Syllable-Timed Speech (STS) approach. This study seeks to examine the effectiveness of STS in reducing stuttering behaviours and to explore whether treatment effects in one language can transfer to the other.

Personal Narrative Coherence in Clinical Practice: A Survey on Current Practices and Future Directions in Hong Kong

This survey aims to understand current practices, challenges, and professional development and research needs regarding personal narrative assessment and intervention in Hong Kong. The findings will inform our team about local professional needs, supporting future funding applications for student training, practitioner workshops, and research development in this area. Participation is anonymous and voluntary, with no personally identifiable information collected or shared. This survey was approved by the Human Subjects Ethics Sub-committee at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (reference number: HSEARS20260119007).

Perceptions of Feeding Tubes: A Study of Carers’ Knowledge and Acceptance in Hong Kong

This survey aims to identify common misconceptions about Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) tubes and Nasogastric (NG) tubes held by Hong Kong carers of people with dysphagia; identify major concerns and considerations that guide Hong Kong people’s decision making in tube feeding options; and explore possible socio-demographic factors that affect carers’ knowledge and acceptance of PEG and NG tubes. The findings are expected to inform the development of targeted educational materials and decision aids to support informed, evidence-based decision-making about feeding-tube options in Hong Kong. Survey on the use of technology among speech-language pathologists (SLPs) practicing in Hong Kong

The survey focuses on the use of both conventional tools and emerging Gen-AI applications. The findings are expected to contribute to the evidence base for technology integration in speech-language pathology, support the development of innovative tools, and inform strategies to enhance clinical practice in Hong Kong’s unique healthcare and cultural environment. The study has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee, HKU (Reference no.: EA250409).
